Old Buckenham Community Primary School was graded as 3 – Satisfactory.
Update January 2010
Old Buckenham Community Primary School was visited by an OFSTED inspector in December 2009 as part of it's programme of monitoring of Grade 3 schools.
The full letter has been attached as a pdf. document and is available through the OFSTED website.
In summary, the findings of the inspector were:
'Having considered all the evidence, I am of the opinion that at this time the school has made good progress in making improvements and good progress in demonstrating a better capacity for sustained improvement.'
We were pleased that the inspectors recognised that the children are happy at the school, well behaved and enjoy their education. Although we were disappointed at some of the detailed judgements, we consider that the overall assessment of the school as ‘satisfactory’ was fair.
None of the main issues raised were a surprise as the governing body had already been working with the Head and the staff at the school to put in place measures to address many of these prior to the OFsted inspection.
What has been done to address the issues raised by OFsted?
Following last September’s OFSTED report we have been addressing the following key areas for improvement:
Improving outdoor provision for the youngest children
Our exciting new outdoor area is very nearly finished, looking great and being enjoyed by the early years children. There will be an official opening on October 21st by Lisa Christensen (Director of Children’s Services). Many thanks to Amanda Cockburn and her team of parents for all their hard work throughout the project.
New early years play area
Improve the quality of teaching by ensuring lesson plans have a sharp focus on learning rather than activity.
New planning sheets for Maths and English were designed and implemented last autumn, these place the emphasis on learning outcomes. Staff and Governors have worked together to create a whole school learning culture, evidence of this can be seen in classrooms with displays of pupil targets, key vocabulary and success criteria to name but a few strategies. Layered targets for Maths and English have been identified for all children that move them on to the next step in their learning. Raising standards in Maths and Writing are key areas for improvement in the school development plan for this year; the Governing Body will be fully involved in monitoring this.
Ensure leaders and managers are more rigorous in monitoring and evaluating the work of the school, particularly in the assessment of pupils’ progress.
The school has bought into a new online tracking package which helps teachers and leaders monitor closely each child’s progress through out the year and across the school. The School Management Team and class teachers can use this to identify trends as well as individual pupils who may need extra help because they are under or indeed over- achieving.
